On her current single, "So Small," from her latest effort, Carnival Ride -- out this week on the Arista imprint -- Carrie Underwood sings the lines: "Go ahead and let the light shine through/I know it's hard on a rainy day/You wanna shut the world out and just be left alone/But don't run out on your faith."
Given the Rockies gut-wrenching loss to the Sox last night in the first game of the World Series, it sounds like girlfriend -- slated to sing the national anthem at Coors Field this Saturday (watch the end of YouTube clip below) -- has been reading our mail. With that in mind, you can forgive us for being a little freaked out by the beginning of next verse: "Cause sometimes that mountain you've been climbing/Is just a grain of sand."
Grain of sand? Really?
Thankfully, by the end of the stanza she's considerably more optimistic: "And what you've been out there searching for forever is in your hands/And when you figure out love is all that matters after all, it sure makes everything else seem so small."
Your mouth to God's ears, Carrie.
Post Script: Just received a pretty hilarious message regarding this post from someone wondering -- somewhat incredulously -- why Ms. Underwood, of all people, was chosen to sing.
"Diane Reeves is singing at D.U. on Saturday. They could've just gotten her? She's homegrown."
Great point.
"We're they going for the country angle? The only connection to Colorado is that she looks like a grown-up Jon Benet."
Alrighty then. Not touching that one.
Most likely, Fox worked out something with Underwood's label. After all, she did just drop a brand new album this week, which will likely be chart topper by this time next week. Beyond that, though, perhaps the network just didn't put that much thought into it. Otherwise, they might've tapped someone like Isaac Slade -- uh, that is, if the Fray wasn't in the middle of a European tour right now. For our money, we'd run the Boston marathon to see the likes of Hazel Miller or Erica Brown or Angie Stevens belt "The Star Spangled Banner." Hell, while we're at it, how about having Ron Miles play an instrumental version?
