There may be a foot of snow on the ground, but spring is on its way, and with spring comes music festivals. This March, many Colorado bands will be headed over to Idaho for Treefort and down to Texas for SXSW. But before our local musicians disappear to the streets and stages of Boise and Austin, Greater Than Collective is throwing a party to entertain Denverites, and raise some money to make sure our musicians don't starve out on the road.
Titled the Spring Break Sendoff, this all night show on Friday, March 6 will span five venues across South Broadway (3 Kings, Mutiny Information Cafe, Hi-Dive, Skylark and Illegal Pete's) and over fifteen bands and a stage just for local comedians.
The price of a ticket is just ten dollars, and Virgil Dickerson from Greater Than Collective said that all of the ticket sales will go directly to the traveling bands.
"We've been throwing a party at SXSW the last four years now," Dickerson said. "We're very aware of how expensive how it is to get down there."
Anyone who buys a ticket will get a download code for music from all the bands playing. "Even if you aren't coming to the show, donate ten dollars and get this great mixtape," says Dickerson.
Greater Than Collective, which is owned by Illegal Pete's and operates as an unconventional record label, says this is just another way for the local community to rally around the ever-thriving music scene here.
"Colorado has a really fantastic comedy and music scene and its great that these acts have the opportunity to play SXSW and Treefort," says Dickerson. "It's great four our community to gather around and offset those costs.
