Pollstar is the most well-known trade publication for the live music industry, so its annual awards are worth taking seriously. So congratulations to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Brown Note Productions, the two Colorado representatives on this year's ballot. Telluride is up for Music Festival of the Year, and Brown Note is nominated for Sound Company of the year.

As far as we know, this is the first time a Colorado festival has been nominated. But Telluride is highly deserving, as one of the state's longest-running institutions and most unique musical experiences of any kind. It's been running for 41 years, with the venerable Planet Bluegrass operating it for the back half of that time. Other nominees in that category include Electric Forest in Michigan, Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island and Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival in Arkansas. So Telluride is in good company, to say the least.

Brown Note Productions, meanwhile, is a Thorton-based production company that works with STS9 and plenty more. It's been a good run for the young company -- it won the Parnelli Award for "Hometown Hero Lighting Company of the Year" in 2013 and now it has a nomination for its sound work from Pollstar.

Nominees were determined by an anonymous panel of 216 promoters, agents, managers and other "touring professionals." Pollstar subscribers have until December 18 to vote. There will be an award show at the Ryman Auditorium on February 21.
