The probable cause statement in the name of Arnoldo Banuelos tells a harrowing tale.
According to the document on view below, Banuelos, 26, held his ex-girlfriend captive for two days, sexually assaulting her repeatedly over that span.
The victim's persistence in trying to reach family members (and their efforts to get police involved) ultimately led to Banuelos's capture — but not until after a metal-bending police chase.
Banuelos has now been charged with a slew of serious crimes, including kidnapping and sexual assault.
At about 5 p.m. on July 16, the arrest affidavit states, the relatives of Banuelos's former girlfriend reported her missing.
They told investigators that the woman had gone to meet with Banuelos at around 10 p.m. the previous evening, July 15.
The location: his home on the 2200 block of South Eaton Street, an area captured in the following interactive graphic. If you have problems seeing the image, click "View on Google Maps."
At the time, the woman said she would return later that evening, but she never did.
Over the next two days, the woman made additional calls to her family, and even sent a text on a phone borrowed from a stranger.
The messages stated that Banuelos was holding her against her will in downtown Denver.
In a subsequent interview with police, the woman revealed that when she had tried to leave his home, Banuelos brandished a handgun, pulled her hair and hit her in the head.
He then allegedly took her to several locations in Denver before settling on a hotel near Interstate 70 and Vasquez.
There, the woman told police, Banuelos sexually assaulted her from shortly after their check-in on the evening of July 15 until the following morning.
They left the hotel on July 16.
Afterward, Banuelos and the woman again traveled to multiple locations before booking a room at another establishment.
The location this time around was the Hilton Garden Inn, at 1400 Welton Street.
The setting was different, but the woman says the scenario was the same.
She maintains that Banuelos sexually assaulted her on a repeated basis throughout the night of the 16th.
Finally, on the 17th, the woman was able to contact her family with specific information about the location she was being held: the Hilton Garden Inn.
Family members raced to the Hilton, arriving in time to see Banuelos and the woman arrive back at the hotel after another drive.
At that point, the relatives dialed 911, and when cops responded and tried to contact Banuelos, he took off in his car.
During the chase that ensued, Banuelos is said to have struck another automobile before coming to a stop near 17th and Broadway, where he was taken into custody.
Now, the Denver District Attorney's Office has formally charged Banuelos with two counts of second-degree kidnapping and six counts of sexual assault, plus menacing, vehicular eluding and third-degree assault.
His bond: $100,000.
Banuelos is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow morning to be advised of the many charges against him.
