Ironman Boulder is a triathlon that's gained a national reputation thanks to its gorgeous setting and high caliber of athletes, many of whom travel from across the country to run, swim and cycle.
This year, however, one of the visiting competitors — forty-year-old Virginia resident Brian Godlove — died days after taking part in this year's event.
Thus far, the cause of Godlove's death hasn't been determined.
And officials and family members alike are providing few details about the tragedy.
The Ironman Boulder website describes the course like so:

The 2.4-mile swim at the Boulder Reservoir will have water temps in the 70’s. The traditionally smooth lake will launch you on your day. The one-loop course will travel north first along the reservoir dam and will head west and then south. The first of two transitions will also be at the Boulder Reservoir.
Bike
The 112 Mile multi-loop course is entirely within Boulder County and features amazing mountain views with some of the same roads trained on by many of our local world champion triathletes. The course has a handful of decent climbs but has a lot of fast and flat sections to keep you moving.
Run
This is a two loop course with 3 out and backs on each loop. We call it the "Flux Capacitor." This course features everything about Boulder we love. A well shaded bike path and plenty of spectator viewing points for your family and friends. There will be aid stations approximately at every mile.

As noted by the Boulder Daily Camera, Godlove completed the swimming portion of the event, which took place on Sunday, August 2, as well as the cycling leg, but not the final running stage.
He is likely the racer transported from the course to an area hospital, although ambulance-service representatives declined to confirm the person's identity to the paper.
The Boulder coroner's office confirms that Godlove died on Wednesday, August 5. An autopsy has been conducted, but further investigation is underway to definitively determine the cause and manner of death.
In the meantime, Godlove's family issued a statement through the coroner's office. it reads:
“Brian Godlove was a beloved husband, father, son and brother who lived and loved life to the fullest, and reflected the very best of the human spirit. He will be profoundly missed, but eternally loved and remembered.”Our sincere condolences to the friends, family and loved ones of Brian Godlove.
