Calvin Sulzle Races to CO With Baby After Her Mom Is Busted for Assaulting Cop

A strange child-custody case that originated in Massachusetts ended, at least temporarily, in Colorado.

The child in question, a ten-month-old girl, is currently with family living in our fair state.

But we don't yet know the legal fates of her parents: Katelyn Monteiro, whose arrest for assaulting a police officer prompted a decision by Massachusetts officials to take the child into protective custody, and Calvin Sulzle, also known as Calvin Brave Hawk, who traveled with the girl across half a continent before the police caught up with him.

Sulzle's Facebook gallery is filled with pics featuring him and various children who pop up on Monteiro's page as well.

We're guessing Monteiro posed for a different kind of photo after what took place early on Monday morning, April 11.

In a post on its Facebook page, the Lowell Police Department notes that the incident happened at 26 Walnut Street in Lowell.

Specifics are few — but the Lowell Sun reports that Monteiro and Hugo Restrepo got into a fight at around 2 a.m. on the 11th.

After officers responded, Monteiro was arrested on suspicion of assault and battery on a police officer and assault and battery on a public servant.

Restrepo, too, was busted for assault and battery on a police officer.

Later that day, the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families sought custody of Monteiro's daughter, the Sun's account continues.

Turns out she was with Sulzle, but while authorities were able to reach him by phone, he allegedly refused to divulge his whereabouts.

The next day, DCF got a court order regarding the girl. But by the time personnel made it to Sulzle's home, he'd already split.

The Lowell police suspected he had traveled to South Dakota, since he is a member of the Sioux Rosebud Tribe.

Then, yesterday, the LPD revealed that Sulzle had been met at Logan Airport in Boston and told them he'd left the baby with relatives in Colorado. He's said to be cooperating with investigators.

It's unclear at this point if Sulzle will be charged with a crime. That will depend on whether or not he knew that DCF had obtained a court order to take the baby by the time he left the state, the Sun maintains.

Most important, however, is this line from the Lowell police announcement: "Information received indicates the child is safe."
