Sometimes, off-the-cuff comments are the most telling -- and Carmelo Anthony made an intriguing one during an appearance this week on TBS's Lopez Tonight. In addressing rumors that he'd rather play in Chicago, New Jersey or wherever in the clip on view below, he was politically correct at the outset -- but it didn't take much of a nudge from host George Lopez to get a sense that he's checking out the other side of the fence.

The ostensible reason for Melo's Lopez visit was the upcoming premiere of the VH1 offering La La's Full Court Wedding, which chronicles the ceremony that united him with longtime fiancee/TV hostess La La Vazquez. But before Lopez got to series pimping, he asked Anthony where he expected to play next season.

"I'm a Nugget. I'm a Nugget, man," Melo answered -- a response better than plenty of others from a Denver fan's perspective.

He added, "There are a lot of rumors. It's crazy how somebody else will predict where they want you to go at, what team they want you on... It's overwhelming sometimes to read the blogs and see the Internet and see what people are saying. Everybody wants to see me go here, everybody wants to see me go there. And I'm not even a free agent yet. That's the tough part."

This last comment hints at a less positive direction from a Nuggets booster's perspective. And he heads that way with a little prompting from Lopez, who said, "If you were a free agent..."

"That's a different story," Anthony interjected, laughing.

It probably is a different story -- which is why the Nuggets need to act now, rather than simply hoping for a more positive outcome.

Look below to watch the complete Melo-La La appearance on Lopez Tonight, complete with Anthony's remark about an NBA trophy ("I'm chasing one," he says) and La La's accusation that he's a shoe hoarder, plus the extended trailer from La La's Full Court Wedding.
