One of the long-held claims about Major League Baseball is that fans of every team are filled with hope during Spring Training.

Unfortunately, the Colorado Rockies, whose Spring Training schedule got underway this week, put the lie to this theory. Even though the team finally fired general manager Dan O'Dowd after years of failing to turn the franchise into a consistent winner, owner Dick Monfort chose Jeff Bridich, someone already on the staff, to take over as GM — and the squad's comparative lack of inactivity during the off-season hardly suggests the new regime is serious about shaking things up.

In short, there's no buzz and little optimism that the Rockies will be anything other than mediocre again this season.
