USED, Denver's underground syringe exchange program (and the subject of the Westword feature "Why Doesn't Colorado Get the Point of Needle Exchange Programs?"), has gone digital with a new website: www.used303.org.
The website features information on how to exchange needles, links to resources for I.V. drug users, and statistics on how many syringes the group exchanges every month. There's also information on how to donate money to the cause. USED's clandestine nature makes it tough for the group to raise significant dough, though they've had some success so far.
Now, for a word about USED: Its mission is to swap injection drug users' used needles for clean ones in order to stop the spread of diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C. But their work is illegal in Colorado, where laws prohibit the possession of drug syringes. So USED, which began more than a year ago, operates off the radar of the police at the same time that above-ground advocates work with lawmakers to change the rules.
