As of this morning, Anne Rowe, a businesswoman, mother of three DPS students and founding co-chair of the pro-reform organization A+ Denver, was the one candidate who had yet to turn in a petition. The deadline to do so is tomorrow at 3 p.m. A valid petition is required to earn a spot on the November 1 ballot.
Rowe is running to represent southeast Denver. Her opponent is Emily Lipp Sirota, a policy analyst for non-profits and the wife AM 760 radio host David Sirota.
In northwest Denver, newcomer Jennifer Draper Carson, an active mother who serves as chairwoman of North High School's Collaborative School Committee, is challenging incumbent Arturo Jimenez, who currently serves as board vice president.
The board's at-large seat has attracted the most interest. Five candidates are running: engineer Roger Kilgore, South High School history teacher Frank Deserino, former DPS employee and city councilwoman Allegra "Happy" Haynes, Jacqui Shumway, a physical fitness advocate and co-founder of the Tai Chi Project, and John Daniel, who told Education News Colorado that his political background includes pushing for the now-repealed Initiative 100, which impounded the cars of undocumented immigrants.
