Jaywalking, punishable in Denver by a simple fine, led the police to arrest 46-year-old Gregory Carter last week for a much bigger crime: sexual assault. The police stopped Carter for jaywalking and then realized he was wanted for the 2012 sexual assault of a 23-year-old woman. DNA linked him to the two-year-old crime, which allegedly took place while the victim was semi-conscious after a suicide attempt.

According to an arrest affidavit, the victim was assaulted in an alley near Gilpin Street and East 13th Avenue, adjacent to Cheesman Park. She'd gone to the park on a Sunday in July after taking "a lot of pills"; the victim told the police she'd been suicidal that day.

The victim remembered being helped by a man and recalled lying down on an animal fur blanket, according to the affidavit. The victim said she didn't know where she was or how she got there, but she realized that the man was having sex with her.

Afterward, the victim said the man told her she "couldn't stay there all day long" and then walked off toward East 14th Avenue. The victim slipped in and out of consciousness that day before calling 911. She described her attacker as a black male in his thirties or forties with "distinctive beads on the ends of his braided hair."

Using a sexual assault kit, the police collected DNA from the victim, which was matched to Carter. The victim later picked Carter out of a photo lineup, the affidavit says.

But Carter wasn't arrested until last week, when a Denver police officer stopped him for jaywalking and found that he had an outstanding warrant. Carter is now in jail on $50,000 bond. He's scheduled to appear in Denver County Court at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 31.
