Lakewood Police Department release:

Lakewood Police to Conduct DUI Checkpoints

On Friday June 19th the Lakewood Police Department, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and the Colorado State Patrol will be conducting a mobile DUI checkpoint in the City of Lakewood. Statistics indicate that a number of DUI arrests in Lakewood occur in the general vicinity of the selected locations.

The checkpoints will take place in the late night hours when statistically a high percentage of all DUI arrests take place.

The Lakewood Police Department is committed to reducing the number of drunk drivers and alcohol related accidents in the City of Lakewood.

"We want people to drive responsibly. We are committed to serving the public and to making our roadways safer," said Chief Kevin Paletta.

The approximate locations of the checkpoints are:

• Jewell Avenue between S. Moore Ct and S. Lee St.

• Colfax Avenue and Gray St.

• Sheridan Blvd and Mississippi Avenue.

Boulder Police Department release:

Police plan stepped up DUI enforcement overnight Saturday

Boulder police are planning stepped up enforcement aimed at getting drunken drivers off the road this Saturday, June 20. A DUI checkpoint will be set up around 9 p.m. on Broadway, just north of Baseline Road, and will operate until 3 a.m. on Sunday, June 21. In addition, police plan to conduct a saturation patrol with one additional officer dedicated to DUI stops in the downtown and University Hill areas.

The extra staffing is possible thanks to $50,000 provided by the state of Colorado Law Enforcement Assistance Fund (LEAF). This money is dedicated to providing overtime DUI enforcement throughout 2009. The department also received $24,900 in DUI checkpoint funds. Officers will conduct five DUI checkpoints during the summer using this allocation. The police department is matching this grant with $7,400 in funds and materials and will also contribute $27,646 in DUI enforcement funds.
