Todd describes cityWILD as "a nonprofit that does outdoor experiential education with middle and high school students. And Kenia and her sister both were longtime students of our program -- and Kenia was a crew leader, which is a paid position. That put her in a leadership position here, and she worked really well with our younger students -- went on a lot of our camping and rafting expeditions, and was learning to be a rafting guide. She was a great role model in a lot of ways."
Given that, it's not surprising "a lot of the students have been really affected by her disappearance," Todd continues. "They've been taking missing posters and hanging them up in their neighborhoods, communities and schools. And some students who haven't been attending the program regularly have come back home, in a way, to see if there's anything they can do."
The candlelight vigil, scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m. tonight at Wyatt Edison Charter School, where Monge was once a student, is one way the cityWILD crew is responding. "It's a community event," Todd emphasizes. "We've posted it on the Facebook community page for her" -- Help Us FIND Kenia -- "and we're asking people to pass it around." That includes "people who have a personal connection, and people interested in raising awareness and sending support to the family.
"Kenia is remembered very fondly by our staff and students," she adds, "and like everybody else, we're really hoping that there'll be a positive outcome."
Here's more details about the vigil, from its Facebook events page.
