Webster's been sentenced to twelve years for sex with the daughter of a onetime assistant coach with his previous team, the Cincinnati Bengals, beginning when she was fifteen.
According to prosecutors, Webster began having sex with the girl, who reportedly lived in the same Cincy neighborhood as him, circa 2009, when she was fifteen -- and they continued to do so for two years.
On a recording played to the jury at his trial, Webster could be heard admitting to intercourse with the girl when she was still underage; in Ohio, sixteen is the legal age of consent. However, he subsequently claimed that they hadn't really gotten horizontal until the following year, when doing so wasn't against the law. His attorney also maintained that the girl had lied about her age.Webster apparently was so confident of being exonerating that he rejected a plea deal that would have put him behind bars for four years. But the trial, at which his accuser sat for what Cincinnati.com describes as several hours or harsh questioning from Webster's attorney, didn't turn out the way he'd hoped. He was ultimately exonerated on three counts but found guilty on four others pertaining to unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.
At his sentencing, Webster delivered a slew of apologies while asserting that many of his offenses took place while he was drunk or high on marijuana. Yet the sentence still wound up being triple the length of the one he'd previously been offered.
Although his attorney says he plans to appeal the conviction as well the length of the sentence, Webster was taken directly to prison, already clad in a striped jumpsuit -- a uniform for less stylish than the one he wore as a Bronco.
