Denver Police Investigate Homicide(Denver) Denver Police are looking into a shooting overnight that left a woman dead in Northwest Denver.
On January 25, 2011, members of the Denver Police Department responded to 936 Sheridan Boulevard at approximately 8:20 p.m. on the report of a shooting. When officers arrived on scene, they discovered the body of a deceased female who had suffered an apparent fatal gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The continued investigation determined that two unknown males entered the victims' home and that at a point after entering, fired shots, killing the victim. Another resident of the home struggled with one of the two suspects and additional shots were fired. The two unknown suspects fled the home and are described as young Hispanic males.
Additional information will be released pending further investigation.
Update, 9:09 a.m. January 26: Initial reports about a murder at Ninth and Sheridan last night suggested that shooting started after an argument between two groups, with a woman caught in the crossfire.
But DPD spokesman Sonny Jackson says that a far different scenario has emerged from further investigation, with the incident now looking like a home invasion turned deadly.
"Two Hispanic males were seen running from the scene on foot," Jackson adds. "So at this point, we're checking on motive and to see who might be involved in this."
Thus far, Jackson doesn't know if the residents of the house recognized the invaders, or if the attack was random. Regarding the early theory about two groups facing off, he says words were exchanged between the invaders and the people in the house, leading to what now appears to be a mistaken conclusion.
Still waiting on identification of the victim and more information about the suspects.
Original item, 7:03 a.m.: It's been an unusually bloody past few days in Denver. On Saturday, Marvin Smith died after a shooting at the Wise Harris Arms apartments and Quentin Smith was killed in a drive-by on North Pontiac Street, just blocks from the spot where Jordan Nelson was murdered in December. And now, yet another slaying -- this one last night, near the intersection of Ninth and Sheridan.
Strangely, the Denver Police Department hasn't issued press releases on any of these three recent homicides. But a 9News report quotes DPD spokesman Detective John White as saying an argument broke out between two groups, prompting gunfire that killed the woman.
Neither the woman nor any suspects have been named at this writing. In the meantime, here's 9News's coverage of the crime.
