After writing The Message column for nearly nine years, I figured that I didn't have a lot of fans at the Denver Post. Little did I realize, though, that the one fan I had wouldn't work.

To explain: Westword's Patricia Calhoun took a ride this past weekend on the Cheyenne Frontier Days train, which the Post has sponsored for ages, and the folks fortunate enough to land seats in the VIP section were given commemorative, battery-operated fans that flashed an anniversary slogan. Ms. C kindly grabbed an extra for me, but when I pressed the button, nothing happened, and neither my efforts nor those of Westword computer wizard and all-around fix-it man Sean Sullivan could change that.

Guess the Post crew would rather I feel the heat than play it cool. Duly noted. -- Michael Roberts
