Dive bars are a dying breed in Denver, as developers buy up — and then clean up (or close altogether) —  this town's classic watering holes. As a result, our list of the top ten dive bars in the metro area requires frequent updating, as some of our favorites disappear. Our favorite dive bar still in existence? Ace Hi Tavern, a sixty-year-old mainstay at 1216 Washington Avenue in Golden, which we named Denver's Best Dive Bar in the Best of Denver 2015.

And the Daily Meal agrees: The national website just released its list of the 25 Best Dive Bars in America for 2015, based on such important criteria as "questionable characters," cheap drinks and a jukebox, and the Ace Hi makes the cut at #14. Here's the Daily Meal description:
Any bar that offers happy hour twice a day will attract quite the crowd, and Ace Hi Tavern is no exception. Happy hour runs 7 a.m. through 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. through 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, allowing locals to enjoy a cheap cold one at their best convenience. Situated on the historic Washington Avenue in Golden, this bar is rich in history and filled with character.
We'll drink to that! But while we're honored that Colorado has two bars in the top 25, we have to quibble with the Daily Meal's second inclusion from this state: Clocking in at #20 is the Sink, whose renovation definitely lifted the place out of true divedom. It's a fine place to grab a beer and a burger, but a dive? No.
For what it's worth, here's the Daily Meal description:
At 93 years of age, The Sink, located in the basement of an ancient frat house, is the oldest bar and restaurant in Boulder. There's plenty of beer here, of course, but it’s best known for serving some of Boulder’s “best burgers,” like the Farmers Market Burger, a grass-fed burger made by executive chef Dave Davis. You might wonder whether a joint that cares about the sourcing of its meat and identifies its chef by name is truly a dive.
What are your favorite bars in the area? Should any others have made the Daily Meal list?
