On Sunday, September 7, 2014, Westword will host its twentieth annual celebration of the Denver dining scene, DISH, in Sculpture Park at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, where many of the favorite restaurants of Cafe Society writers and readers will be serving delectable dishes. South Broadway's Azucar Bakery -- our 2013 pick for Best Peruvian Desserts -- will be offering a taste you might not have experienced, but one that's a culinary standard in South America. Peruvian-born Owner Marjorie Silva opened Azucar in 2006 to fill a hole in a town more accustomed to cupcakes and pie than flan and Suspiro de Limeña . Rapid growth led Silva and her team to relocate in 2011 to their current location, a shiny, pink-frosted space befitting the goodies within.

For their latest bow at DISH, Azucar is educating diners on one of the favorite treats of South and Central America: alfajores, shortbread cookies with house-made dulce de leche caramel sauce in between, all dusted with powdered sugar. They're popular from the tip of Chile to the mountains of Honduras and beyond, and each country has countless variations. According to Azucar, in Peru and Argentina alone there are at least fifteen different varieties.
