The latest Dunkin' Donuts to debut in the metro area, at 2001 Sheridan Boulevard in Edgewater, did a real public service by getting its doors open before January 1 -- when people eager to buy pot started lining up outside Northern Lights just up the street. The shop did a big business that day. But the public service didn't end there: Today this Dunkin' Donuts will celebrate its grand opening with deals for both customers and the community at large. Starting this morning and running through January 21, anyone who visits this location will receive a free medium hot or iced coffee.

And the store is donating 20 percent of all sales today to the Edgewater Optimist Club. "We are excited that Dunkin' Donuts is joining the neighborhood and becoming a part of Edgewater by giving back to our kids," said Jennifer Schartz, vice president of the Edgewater Optimist Club, in announcing the fundraiser. "What better way to show they care about our community?"

This Dunkin' Donuts location, the fifth to open in the metro area in 2013 (which made doughnuts one of our big culinary stories for the year), is owned and operated by Vanguard Capital Partners LLC, founded in 2012 by Josh Blanchard, Matthew Schnittman and Douglas Kelsall. It has both indoor seating -- with a great view across Sloan's Lake -- and a drive-thru, and is open seven days a week from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
