First Look: Bacon Social House Grabs a Slice of the Sunnyside Restaurant Scene

Sunnyside's new all-day eatery, Bacon Social House, opened this morning at the corner of 44th Avenue and Alcott Street. Looking from the street, you'd never guess that the architecturally impressive, two-story building is now part of the neighborhood restaurant landscape. But a peek inside the Cobbler's Corner development, much of which is still under construction, reveals an open courtyard where Bacon awaits hungry breakfast, lunch and dinner guests.

Sidewalks lead to Bacon from either 44th or Alcott, and although the restaurant is still a bit of a secret, an expansive menu from chef Brian Crow and a sunny, wide-open dining room, bar and mezzanine space should soon have Sunnyside residents clamoring for a table. Fortunately, there's room for 100 — plus another 50 or so when the weather's nice. 

Bacon opens at 7 a.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. weekends, coming out of the gates with an all-week brunch menu rather than quibbling over the difference between breakfast and lunch. You'll find a list of build-your-own omelets, sandwiches and scrambles — all with a choice of protein, vegetable, cheese and sauce — as well as pancake flights and a quatrain of Benedicts. There's also healthy fare with a super-food slant: think quinoa bowls packed with nuts and fruit or an acai parfait of Greek yogurt. Burgers, soups and entrees mean that the brunch menu transitions easily from morning to noon.

A separate dinner menu ranges from comfort-food classics like chicken pot pie to "breakfast at night" in sweet (pumpkin crepes) and savory (chicken and waffles) choices. But light eaters and vegetarians will also find something to love, whether it's ratatouille with spaghetti squash, phyllo crust and tomato broth, or DIY salads with seasonal ingredients.

And, of course, there's the bacon — five kinds, in fact. Choose a slice for $1.75 or a flight of six flavors — habanero, garlic, candied, applewood, paleo and a rotating chef's selection — for $9. And while you're at it, wash down your pig with a bacon Old-Fashioned or a bacon Bloody Mary.

For happy hour — or Social Hour, as it's called here — a selection of hearty appetizers and discount drinks is available from 2 to 6 p.m., including a bacon-and-beer combo for $10 that packages your choice of bacon with a draft beer of the day and an order of sweet-potato fries.
