Colorado Firefighter Appreciation Week begins September 8 and will culminate with the first annual Fight Fire With Beer Festival on Saturday, September 15 at the Twenty Ninth Street Mall, 1710 29th Street in Boulder. The week will honor firefighters currently risking their lives battling the High Park, Waldo Canyon and Flagstaff fires.

"On behalf of the people of Colorado, we want to thank the brave firefighters who are putting themselves in harm's way by battling these fires," Governor John Hickenlooper said in a statement announcing his involvement. "We are pleased and proud to support Firefighter Appreciation Week and hope every Coloradan honors those who put their lives on the line to protect us."

And the governor -- who co-founded the Wynkoop Brewing Company -- will show his support in person as a judge for the Governor's Cup, a benefit beer competition that will be part of the festivities.

Restaurants and bars can go to the Firefighter Appreciation Week website to register promotions and events that will help raise funds for the cause. Breweries can also sign up to take part in the beer festival there.

"We believe it's important to support and celebrate firefighters during this difficult time," says Colorado Brewers Guild spokesman Steve Kurowski. "We're encouraging every brewery to show their support of these brave men and women by participating in the Fight Fire with Beer Governor's Cup."

The competition will take place during the festival in Boulder and will be judged by Colorado fire chiefs in addition to the governor. The winning brewery will create the official Fight Fire with Beer beer, which will be distributed to bars, restaurants and liquor stores throughout the state. Proceeds from sales of that beer will support fire-safety education.
