Among this weeks openings and closings was the City Park Le Peep, surprising only because we were amazed it was still open. The building itself had taken on the aspect of a rundown country-club pool house and the menu had lost its luster among a host of newer, trendier breakfast eateries nearby. Still, the place served its purpose and in a neighborhood just beginning to see the beginnings of a restaurant scene, a vacant spot is a reminder that a familiar name is no guarantee of success.

Speaking of familiar names, Mezcal is set to reopen on August 29 after a makeover from owners Chris Swank and Loris Venegas. Mark Antonation talked to the owners as well as new chef Chris Douglas about the menu and interior decor changes. And in keeping with the theme of Mexican cuisine, he also visited Los Pastes in Aurora, where Cornish and Mexican tradition come together in savory empanadas. In other news:
