There are few foods that I don't like, few styles that I can't develop an appreciation for on some level -- especially after trying them a couple of times. But I'm having a real problem with cheesesteaks. I've had ´em at Pat's, Deli Zone, Denver Ted's, Taste of Philly and now Cheesesteak Connection, and I'm just not getting the allure.

I like steak. I like cheese. But gooey cheese melted all over steak doesn't taste very good, and beyond that, it makes you feel horrible afterward. I realize these comments may not engender a lot of brotherly love, but this column is about bread and meat and vegetables and truth, and if you can't handle that, then you need to switch to soup.

At least the steak at Cheesesteak Connection was good, and since I asked for it hoagie-style (meaning the sandwich had lettuce and tomatoes), plus sautéed onions and mushrooms, this cheesesteak tasted better than some. The roll wasn't bad, either. But that fact remains that it was primarily a greasy combo of steak and melted cheese, and I felt horrid afterward.

Even the Tastykakes didn't help.

Most unappetizing of all, however, is that every time I say Cheesesteak Connection, I hear Kermit the Frog in my head singing "Rainbow Connection" in the Muppet Movie:

Why are there so many Songs about cheesesteaks And what's on the other side Cheesesteaks are visions They're only illusions And cheesesteaks have nothing to hide So we've been told and some chose to believe it But I know they're wrong, wait and see

Someday we'll find it The Cheesesteak Connection The lovers, the dreamers and meeeeeeeee!
