According to an annual survey by the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative, over 11,167 people in Denver are homeless, with a whopping 43 percent of them women and 85 percent of that total reporting an income of less than $800 per month. The Denver Voice, a grassroots newspaper created by the homeless for the homeless, shares their stories and struggles with the rest of the public. And tonight, you can raise a glass -- and help raise funds -- for this venture.

Rick Barnes, a Denver businessman and philanthropist, had a hand in reviving the Denver Voice, which stopped publication in 2006; he would reach out to the homeless individuals he met on his daily commute to work via the 16th Street Mall, and decided their tales needed to be told in a rejuvenated Voice. Today the paper not only covers the homeless community, it publishes essays, poetry and art by people who have lived on the streets. And it also provides them some income, since they sell the paper.

Tonight at 6:30 p.m., Marlowe's will host Raise Your Glass, Raise your Voice, a fundraiser to benefit the Denver Voice. Local comedian Ben Roy will emcee; the event will include a special performance by Jonny 5 of Flobots, as well as silent and live auctions with packages from Pablo's Coffee, Comedy Works and other vendors. General admission tickets are $50; VIP seating is $100. For more information, visit denvervoice.org.
