Ten Tasty, Non-St. Patrick's Day (!) Culinary Events This Weekend

St. Patrick's Day isn't until Tuesday, but you wouldn't know it as you look around Denver this weekend. Many Denverites will be throwing back green beers, car bombs, whiskey and corned beef until they are two finger-assaulting any stranger unlucky enough to be caught without the obligatory green garb. If this amateur drinking holiday isn't your cup of Irish tea, here are some alternative events on this weekend's culinary calendar.

Friday, March 13 

FNA, a former-street-food-turned-apparel company that sells T-shirts and uses the proceeds to fight local hunger among the poor and homeless, will be launching its apparel-only brand today with a party at Prost Brewing Company from 7 to 10 p.m. Prost and FNA will be handing out free food and drinks, and there will be T-shirt giveaways as well as an opportunity to learn how FNA helps to fight hunger in the community. The Alamo Drafthouse in Littleton is celebrating this Friday the 13th with a very special craft dinner and screening of the original Friday the 13th film. The film will be preceded by a live Q&A via Skype with co-creator and original screenplay writer Victor Miller. The evening of horror starts at 7:15 p.m. and tickets, which include three beers and dinner, are $50 per person. For more information, visit drafthouse.com.

The second Annual Brew & Stew will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. at Mile High Station. The fundraiser for Hope House of Colorado will feature all-you-can eat and drink beer and stew, as well as games (including a corn-hole competition) and live music, all for just $40. Cook Street School of Culinary Arts has teamed up with a local spirits company to bring you its “Steak and Spirits” class. You’ll learn about various cuts of beef and how to cook them with accompanying marinades and sauces — and then pair them with a local spirit. Complete the class by trying out your creations and swirling, tasting and learning about a variety of cocktails, including the classic martini. The class is $99 per person and will run from 6 to 9:30 p.m. To register or for more info, click here. 

In honor of the year it first opened as a butcher shop in 1979,  Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille is offering a 79-cent Pork Chop lunch to the first 100 people in line today starting at 11 a.m. Get there early to save your spot, though; this is such a deal that people are probably lining up right now.

Saturday, March 14   

René Heredia, internationally renowned flamenco guitar player, will be playing two dinner shows at the Tapas D’Jerez today. The shows will begin at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Call 303-488-0101 to reserve your table; there is no cover. 

 St. John’s School and Early Learning Center is hosting the second annual Men Who Cook, a tasting fundraiser, today from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at Galvanize. This event will bring together some of Denver's top chefs, who will each man a tasting station; their samples will all be paired with wine and Colorado craft beer. Chefs for the evening include Simon Purvis of Edge at the Four Seasons, Patrick Maxey of La Sandia, Matt Mine of Blackbird and Atticus, and Kinga Klek of Belvedere; there will also be several of St. Johns amateur chefs. Tickets are $50 each or $80 for two, grab yours here. 


 Sunday, March 15

Selection in the Tavern’s Brews ‘N Brackets begins today and runs through the first March Madness NBA game on March 19. With each visit to a Tavern location, they get a game piece; they can then go on-line to the Tavern’s website, enter their game piece code and create their own bracket. If they pick up multiple game pieces from different visits (one card per visit), they may fill out multiple brackets. The top three winners from each Tavern will receive a $200, $150 or $100 Tavern Gift Card. Satchel's on 6th will be throwing a community dinner and pig roast today. There will be happy hour drinks from 5 to 6 p.m. with the presentation of the pig at 6 sharp.
