Number 7: French dip from Second Home Kitchen & Bar
While the French dip isn't French, Philippe Matheiu, its originator, was. Apparently Philippe, who owned a still existing Los Angeles deli called, not surprisingly, Philippe's, was making a sandwich for a customer when he accidentally dropped a French roll into a puddle of beef drippings. The customer, a police officer, liked the sandwich so much that he showed up the next day and asked Philippe to prepare it for him again, exactly the same way. And that, more or less, is how the French dip made its entrance into America's restaurant kitchens, including Second Home Kitchen & Bar, which delivers Denver's most desirous French dip, tender, rotisseried flesh from a leg of lamb mounted on a crusty, chewy roll, served with an espresso-tinted jus that's deeply-flavored, rich and lush.
