Number 26: Italian sandwich from Masterpiece Deli
If you're going to haul out the ego and controversially deem your restaurant, or, in this case, deli, a "masterpiece," you sure as hell better pimp sandwiches that live up to the lofty superlative. There's a reason why this Highland sandwich shop commands lines out the door, making it nearly impossible to snatch up one of the few tables or counter stools that take up nearly every inch of space: It really is that good. Bite into the Italian sandwich: thin, nearly translucent sheets of Parma prosciutto, the flesh of smoky salami, the rich fattiness of mortadella, pepperoni and capicolla; tarps of provolone, the peppery potency of arugula, glistening lettuce leaves, and slivered red onions; crusty ciabatta slicked with vinegar and oil and smeared with a black pepper-spiked aioli that adds the final burst of bliss. All of which goes to say that the Italian sandwich is nothing short of a masterpiece.
