Number 7: Rack of lamb from Cafe Brazil
The near-translucent, springy scallops at Cafe Brazil are the size of the Goodyear blimp and taste unmistakably like the sea; the cucumber yogurt soup, flavored with onions and sharp jolts of chile, should be protected under the endangered liquids act; the brassy stews, tempered with coconut milk and lush with seafood and fish, deserve their own special place in the culinary clouds; the spectacular rum collection -- there are nearly 100 different varieties -- is unrivaled; and now that there's a rum bar, you have the opportunity to samba your way to a free drink, provided you have the moves to keep your hips swiveling for at least 60 seconds. All that, and we haven't even touched on the lamb, a whole rack of lusty, crimson tinged New Zealand chops marinated in garlic, fresh mint and Argentinean spices and fanned across a plate ringed with vegetables and fluffed rice. Cafe Brazil's seafood has always been excellent, but the rack of lamb, often offered as a special, makes us grunt and moan like uncivilized heathens. Like we care.
