Gas prices are over the top, but alternative-energy folks say we can save fossil fuels by harnessing energy from such sources as the sun and the wind. I recently set out to absorb some energy from both on the rooftop deck of the Tavern Downtown and wound up making my own alternative discovery: 190 Octane. When I asked our server exactly what was in this very orange cocktail, he replied: "Mostly vodka." I suspected some grain alcohol, too, because the drink was so powerful it tasted like jet fuel, and the next day I felt like I'd been run over by an ethanol-powered truck. But in a good way. For me, a good drinking roof always feels like someone's backyard barbecue, and by that standard, the Tavern Downtown (formerly the Soiled Dove, but under the same owners) is a very good drinking roof. On the Colorado Rockies' opening day, the crowd up here always gets into a "show us your tits" rivalry with LoDo's Bar & Grill across the street. And in a few weeks, the Tavern will be a great place to get a bird's-eye view of the action at The Real World house just a few steps away. Since service can be slow, you might want to bring cash and order your drinks at the bar; otherwise, you could be idling at your table for a long time. And you don't want to waste any time when you could be fueling up with 190 Octane.
