We're almost two months into this new year, so it's a good time to throw resolutions out the window. Resolve to stop by Steve's Snappin' Dogs this weekend for a free Hostess Twinkie or cupcake, which Steve's will be handing out to patrons to mark the hot-dog joint's third birthday.

Last year, Steve's went through 1,900 of the pastries. The reason for this," explains owner Steve Ballast, "is our shtick is: 1) We give a sample of our dog every day to every one, first -timers or regulars, 2) since day one, anyone with a birthday or anniversary gets a Twinkie or Hostess cupcake with ice cream and a hot dog hat, and that's young or old."

But Steve's charitable effort's don't end there. "In addition," says Ballast, "we have started a School Day Out, when a percentage of sales goes to that school's PTA." Then there's Project Angelheart, "our number one charity for our second annual hot dog contest in July," he continues. "We are coming up with an Angel Dog to add to our menu and a percentage of that dog will go to them every day!"

Steve's Snappin' Dogs is located at 3525 East Colfax Avenue; for more info on the anniversary, which runs today through February 22, call 303-333-7627.

Keep Westword Free... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism.
