Black Pearl dives into Duo for its new executive chef

Just got off the horn with Jeffrey Musat, general manager of Encore (2550 East Colfax Avenue) and Black Pearl, the New American restaurant at 1529 South Pearl Street whose (now) former chef, Micah Watkins, wrapped up his last day on the line yesterday. Stepping into his shoes, Musat tells me, is Kate Horton, the former sous chef at Duo, the Highland restaurant where she worked for the past three years, first under John Broening, now the exec at Olivea (Duo's sibling restaurant at 719 East 17th Avenue), and Tyler Skrivanek, Duo's current exec chef de cuisine (Broening still oversees the kitchen).

"She staged for us for a few nights at Black Pearl, and within a few hours, I knew I wanted to hire her," says Musat. "She's awesome and really knows her stuff. We're very excited to have her work with us."

Horton will take over the kitchen at Black Pearl sometime during the third week of December, says Musat.
