Candy Girls: Sunkist Float Soda

I love oranges and cream together. Those Dreamsicles really are dreamy in my mind, and I've also developed quite a fondness for Stewart's Orange 'n Cream soda.

First Reactions:

When I spied these new Sunkist Float sodas, described as "a creamy blend of Sunkist soda and ice cream flavor," I imagined they'd be similar to the Stewart's. I became suspicious, however, when I saw that the soda is actually very murky-looking, like someone actually left a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream to melt in the soda and it had since separated. The Stewart's always has a nice, refreshing, mostly clear color and is actually completely non-dairy. I'm starting to think the Sunkist bottle has a full plastic jacket to hide the unappetizing look of the drink, and I'm almost nervous to try it.

When I first untwist the cap, the smell isn't bad and I'm hopeful. But the first swig leaves a decidedly chemical taste in my mouth. It also has a surprisingly thick consistency, making me feel like I'm drinking strangely flavored cough syrup. The first three ingredients are filtered carbonated water, sugar and skim milk, and the drink also includes cream -- which explains the very rich milkiness -- as well as a host of chemicals -- which explains the chemical flavor. I have to work hard to choke down this soda, but at least Sunkist has has very accurately copied the flavor of cheap ice cream melted in soda. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of actual orange soda floats, so this shoddy imitation is even more repugnant. Blech!

Stay away! Don't say you weren't warned.

Would we finish the soda: No way, Jose. Would we buy again: Never Rating: 0 out of 5
