Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project, one of the most unusual and exciting brewing concepts to start up in Colorado, plans to release its first two bottled beers, Pure Guava Petite Sour and Wild Wild Brett Rouge, on Thursday in Fort Collins.
Both "wild" or "sour" beers have been aged with brettanomyces yeast strains -- a subject that Crooked Stave founder Chad Yakobson studied in school. Yakobson is well-versed in certain styles of "sour" ales, which got their start in Belgium hundreds of years ago.
The Pure Guava Petite Sour is a 4.5 percent ABV wheat beer, brewed with oats, coriander and sumac, then fermented with brett in Crooked Stave's oak foeder. It gets its name from the tropical fruit aroma and flavors created by the yeast.
The Wild Wild Brett Rouge, at 5.2 percent ABV, was made with Hawthorn berries, rose hips and fifteen pounds of hibiscus. It was fermented with 100 percent brett.
"They are both drinking really well right now," says Yakobson, who has released versions of the Petite Sour in kegs in previous weeks. Both beers will be available in 750 ml bottles for $12.99 each -- a relatively modest price compared to similar sour beers from breweries like Boulevard and the Bruery, Yakobson says. "We are going to be extremely competitive in the market. We are making these for people to be able to get them."

Crooked Stave made 147 cases of the Petite Sour and 139 of the Wild Wild Brett. About one hundred of each will be for sale at the release, which begins at 6 p.m. at Funkwerks Brewing in Fort Collins, where Crooked Stave currently operates. The rest of the beer will be sold at select bottle shops along the Front Range.
Yakobson plans to brew another five or six beers this year, including a barrel-aged sour and a massive, 18 percent ABV Russian imperial stout.
