Like a fine-art collector, Euclid Hall's Ryan Conklin has been gathering up special, rare or unusual examples of his muse over the past nine months and secreting them away. But this month, Conklin, a certified beer Cicerone, is ready to put on a show.
Euclid Hall will tap one of these beers -- and there are some prime ones -- every day at 5 p.m. for the rest of January in what the restaurant is calling Beer Month. The beers range in price from $5.25 to $9 for an eight-to-ten-ounce pour. Euclid Hall will also host Beer Bites nights on Tuesdays, pairing food and brews.
"Running a beer program is a puzzle, especially when you have access to a lot of great things," Conklin says. "With that comes the opportunity to buy great beer and then serve it when we want to serve it, not right when we buy it. You take control of your beer program that way, rather than letting seasonal releases take control of you."
In other words, he explains, "you are curating it, or building a library of kegs in your cellar. That goes on for me throughout the year."
Some of the barrels, which range in size, were tapped last year and resealed. Some have never been tapped, and some were purchased just for Beer Month.
"The core idea when we started talking about this is that during the Great American Beer Festival, there are so many amazing beers, and so many people come through that our regular customers somehow get pushed aside," he says. "We wanted to give them the opportunity to experience the beers that go up during GABF at a time of the year when there aren't very many other events going on around town, in terms of beer."
Most of the offerings on the Beer Month list are rare, smaller-batch or seasonal beers from distinguished breweries in Colorado and around the country. This is high-end, highly-rated stuff that is often labor-intensive and expensive to produce.
Angel's Share, from California's Lost Abbey, for example, is a highly sought-after strong ale that was aged in both bourbon or brandy barrels for a year or more. Angel's Share is 12.5 percent ABV and gets an "exceptional" rating on Beer Advocate.
Then there's Lilokoi Mahu, from Avery Brewing in Boulder, an amazing sour beer made with Hawaiian passionfruit that gives it a carbonated juice-like flavor.
Beer Bites runs from 3 p.m. until closing on Tuesdays and includes two-ounce pours of three beers paired with three bite-sized snacks for $12.50 in the bar; Euclid will offer sour beers on January 10, farmhouse ales on January 17, hoppy beers on January 24, and dark and strong brews on January 31.
