The Place: Jax Fish House, 1539 Seventeeth Street, 303-292-5767.
The Hours: Everyday from 4 until 6 p.m.
The Deal: Appetizers range from $4 to $6; $4 specialty cocktails and select wines by the glass; $3 well drinks; $2.50 Coors Light drafts.
The Digs: There is nothing spectacular about the decor at the LoDo Jax Fish House, but while the space itself feels somewhat contrived and unoriginal, the comfortable atmosphere and incredible service will have you contemplating staying long after happy hour ends, regardless of what your plans were. The patio is awesome and provides opportunity for downtown people-watching, and the location is perfect for catching some grub and a cocktail before a Rockies game.
The Verdict: The happy hour at Jax should come with a disclaimer -- it can be dangerous! The cocktails are refreshingly delicious and dirt cheap. Try the strawberry lemonade (house-infused strawberry vodka with lemonade) for a tantalizing treat that isn't too sweet and drinks easy; the Mango Tango, a tequilarific delight, comes highly recommended as well. The oysters are a rockin' deal at one dollar each, but we found the happy hour appetizers to be unremarkable. The breaded crab claws ($5) lacked complexity and had a strange texture, and while the buffalo shrimp were good, they didn't have us singing from the rafters. On the other hand, the happy hour bartender seemed capable of that, and more: He was friendly and hilarious, but left us alone when we needed to chat.
