Great Divide Brewing mixes things up, releases Nomad, a pilsner, in the winter

Great Divide Brewing is known for taking big, bold beer styles and turning them on their head, and they plan to mix it up again by releasing an unexpected beer -- a light lager -- at an unexpected time: winter. Nomad is a 5.4 percent ABV Bohemian pilsner that will be released in six-packs in January. It's a seasonal beer that will replace Belgica, that Belgian-style IPA that was one of Great Divide's previous January-March brews.

"We like to change things up, says brewery spokeswoman Hanna Laney. "We definitely get that reputation of being a big-beer brewery, but our beers are pretty nuanced, and this is an example of us putting a Great Divide twist on something." Great Divide is known for making huge beers like its Yeti stout and Yeti's numerous cousins, its Old Ruffian barleywine, and its Hercules double IPA.

"People normally think of pilsners as soft and unassuming," Laney adds. "But this will be full flavored and have as much depth as our other beers."

She didn't say what the "twist" will be, and the label offers no insights beyond the typical ingredients used in pilsners. "Nomad is our spin on the classic Bohemian Pilsner style," it reads. "The journey starts with German malts and Saaz hops that offer a lively floral nose and crispness, while a full 5 weeks of lagering time ensures that Nomad is eminently balanced. This Nomad may wander, but it's got some serious roots."

Pilsners, which are usually lighter in flavor and alcohol content are typically associated with summer, but Laney isn't worried about unveiling it during the middle of the winter. "We've had success releasing beers whenever we want," she says. "I think people like good beer no matter the season."
