Katie Mullen's, the Irish restaurant and bar at 1550 Court Place, opened two months ago, but it's hosting a grand-opening party from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 23 that's a benefit for Friends of the Denver Fire Department. Tickets are $25, and include cocktails and appetizers; for more information, go to www.fdfd.org or call 303-594-6567.

And from 6 to 9 p.m. April 23 at the Cable Center on the University of Denver campus, SOUP! (Shots Offer Unrivaled Production) will raise funds for the Colorado Children's Immunization Coalition. Restaurants providing the culinary concoctions this year include Strings, Table 6, Vesta Dipping Grill, Coral Room, Dazzle, Il Posto, Lola, Red Tango, Satchel's Market and Abrusci's; Great Divide Brewing, City Bakery, Mondo Vino and Café Europa are also helping out. Tickets are $50 per person or $90 per couple; get them at www.childrensimmunization.org/soup.

Keep Westword Free... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Denver with no paywalls.
