Atomic Tamale just opened at 1450 Carr Street in Lakewood -- and on Sunday, when we stopped by to check out the new digs, we were happy to learn that the joint is still serving its free vegan menudo with a "special" Sunday order of two tamales and three falafel-stuffed taquitos. We feasted, shopped and snapped some photos along the way.

The menu still features the original vegetarian tamale (green chile and cheese) and vegan tamale (red chili and soy meat), along with the two latest hits, red-chili-and-potato and calabacita-style (which includes squash, corn and bell pepper) -- both vegan.

The eatery still shares a space with Las Muertas clothing and accessories, hand-made and hard-to-find styles with skull-decorated twists.

There are also hand-made hair accessories available for purchase.

Later in the summer, the owners plan to place tables out front; meanwhile giant fixtures like this hearse-cabinet display case provide lots to look at while you wait for your take-out order. (There are no tables inside for eating.)

Every Sunday, you'll see a table set up with shredded cabbage, cilantro, corn chips and diced onion to add to your menudo.

That's the stuff right there!

Atomic Tamale has been figuring out its hours, so check the Atomic Tamale Facebook page for the most up-to-date information; hours are currently set at 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
