Support the independent voice of Denver and help keep the future of Westword free.
We can almost taste that Detroit-style pizza now: Michigan natives and friends Jeff Smokevitch and Giles Flanagin have fired up the ovens and are just about ready to open Blue Pan Pizza at 3930 West 32nd Avenue. The new eatery has been several years in the making; Smokevitch started Brown Dog Pizza a decade ago, but an earlier attempt to bring the concept to Denver was quashed in Washington Park. Now Highland will get the Detroit-style pie, as well as several other models, at Blue Pan. Mark Antonation recounted the whole story in last week's Chef and Tell — and it was enough to get one reader salivating. Says Jose:
For once, I actually look forward to going somewhere that Westword suggested.
Have you tried Detroit-style pizza before? Will Wash Park's loss be Highland's gain?
Keep Westword Free... Since we started Westword, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Denver, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Denver with no paywalls.
