I haven’t been to Philadelphia since I was around twelve years old, and I don’t recall whether or not I had a cheese steak. In fact, I don’t remember much about the city at all, aside from the Liberty Bell and the Betsy Ross House. So it’s possible I’m not the best person to judge how authentic the cheese steaks are from Taste of Philly in Denver.
But I can tell you that they do taste good. Located at 12th and Broadway, on a somewhat downtrodden block, Taste of Philly still hasn’t replaced its plastic sign with a permanent one, but judging from the lunch crowd, the place is probably here to stay.
The company, which has ten Front Range shops, boasts – as do most of the cheese steak places in town – that its cheese steaks are so real, so authentic, they will make the City of Brotherly Love file for divorce. The owners are from Philly, the meat is sliced and boxed to certain specifications; they even serve TastyKakes and Amoroso Bread.
All of which is well and good. All I know is that the Mushroom Philly tasted great. The key was the grease and the cheese. Without it, the steak would have just been a pile of, well, meat. – Jonathan Shikes
