Winter, 1995: Craig Newmark spreads the seeds of what would grow to become Craigslist by emailing his friends about events in the Bay Area.

Word spread quickly. During the ensuing months, droves of new members subscribe and begin posting their own ads. Newmark makes no attempt to moderate and lets it grow organically.

Winter, 1996: Craigslist comes to resemble more of a digital classified selection than a mere email.

Spring, 1999: Newmark incorporates the site, making it a for-profit outfit, but nonetheless sticking with the dot-org domain name to reflect its self-described noncommercial nature.

June 23, 2007: After telling her mother, Nili, that she was heading to a party in Los Angeles, Rancho Santa Margarita 19-year-old Donna Jou hops on a motorcycle with a man police believe was John Steven Burgess, a convicted sex offender. Donnas family never sees her again. Jou and Burgess reportedly met on Craigslist when Jou, a San Diego State student, posted an advertisement for her services as a math tutor.

March 17, 2009: In connection with the disappearance of Rancho Santa Margaritas Donna Jou in 2007, John Steven Burgess is charged in Los Angeles with involuntary manslaughter, concealing an accidental death, and two counts of selling or transporting a concealed substance. According to the Los Angeles Times, police say Burgess told them that he dumped Jous body off the California coastline after she overdosed on heroin and cocaine. Jou and Burgess reportedly met on Craigslist.

February 2009: A Dallas man was found guilty of capital murder for killing a 21-year-old woman who responded to his Craigslist ad for a 1995 Chevrolet Caprice.
