Carol Morrison and her partner, Mary Alice Wells, known as Cush and Cat, respectively, operate the Sacred Smoke Sanctuary at 3704 Downing Street, which is part church, part art studio, part rehearsal space, part theater, part lounge and part residence. Cush and Cat enjoyed the social use of cannabis before social use was cool, and the front of the building is used for marijuana-friendly events. In the back is the Maze Haus, a three-bedroom apartment with one room that operates as an Airbnb, but the others are open to anyone who needs a safe place. All photos by Kate McKee Simmons.
