Thousands Rally Outside Aurora Immigrant Detention Center

More than a thousand people met outside the immigrant detention center in Aurora — which is operated by private prison company GEO Group through a contract with ICE — on Friday, July 12, for what began as a candlelight vigil to call attention to the subpar conditions in such facilities. Local immigrant activists spoke, and protesters participated in a peaceful march. Toward the end of the four-hour rally and after many people had left, about one hundred broke off from the group and, in a story that's gone national, replaced the American, Colorado and GEO Group flags flying at the facility with a Mexican flag; they also defaced pro-police flags. Though the protest remained peaceful, police are investigating the activists who replaced the flags for potential trespassing, according to the Aurora Sentinal
