Meet Kalyn Heffernan, a Real MasterMind

When Westword decides to put on a show, we really put on a show! Our 21st annual Westword Music Showcase in June included a special MasterMind award, sponsored by the Biennial of the Americas, which went to a performer who's as inspirational offstage as she is on: Kalyn Heffernan. Born with a natural sense of rhythm and a fierce rebellious streak, Heffernan puts both to abundant use as leader of the Denver-based hip-hop group Wheelchair Sports Camp and as a co-founder of Royalty Free Haiti, a non-profit pushing music education in Haiti. But just following Heffernan here at home is an education.
