Denver is a literary town, thanks to Beat roots, a strong regional aesthetic, a thriving writing school, great bookstores and slam-poetry prowess, among other things. And if much of that daily activity flies slightly under the public radar, it doesn’t seem to matter: Community is strong here, from the halls of academia to the Mercury Cafe poetry mic. To celebrate, a number of lit organizations, including the national reading series At the Inkwell, Colorado Humanities, Fbomb, Lighthouse Writers Workshop, Mile-High MFA at Regis University, BookBar and Tethered by Letters, are banding together for the inaugural Lit Crawl Denver, joining other cities around the world in celebrating local literary luminaries of every stripe under the Litquake banner.
Local Lit Crawl organizer Monique Antonette Lewis of the At the Inkwell reading series says it's really a group project, and credits BookBar owner Nicole Sullivan for coordinating venues in the laid-back Tennyson Street Business District. Atmosphere, she believes, has everything to do with the success or failure of this new event. “I’m finding that there are a lot of people who don’t even know what a reading is,” Lewis notes. “This is a way to introduce ourselves to people who are not part of a literary-arts community — by setting up in intimate venues where you wouldn’t expect a reading. Maybe someone will just show up at their favorite bar and there will be a reading that night!”
The Lit Crawl kicks off at 6 p.m. September 2 at BookBar, 4280 Tennyson Street, wending its way down the street from one venue to another, for a series of six readings sponsored by the individual groups. It all winds up at the Oriental Theater, 4335 West 44th Avenue, for an after-party featuring an adult spelling bee, burlesque and circus acts, the second annual Fu*%ing Fabulous Fiction Contest and more. The walk itself is free, but it’ll cost you $12 at the door to get into the 21+ party. For information, a map and a complete schedule, visit litquake.org/events/lit-crawl-denver.
