“If you want to wear a prom dress, you’re more than welcome to. Same goes for a banana suit — it’s not mandatory, but encouraged,” says Gretchen Wodniak, co-organizer of tonight’s Dong Gong Show. But off-the-wall costumes are just one part of this yearly adult-themed extravaganza, which blends a costume party with karaoke, all set to the rules of ’70s television classic The Gong Show.
In costume or not, anyone is invited to get on stage at Voodoo Comedy Playhouse and strut their singing stuff, picking from a wide variety of country, rap and rock-and-roll favorites to woo the judges. But partiers beware: If the panel doesn’t think your performance is top-notch, a twelve-inch dildo will hit the gong, and the authorities will decide your fate. Guest judges Juicy la Booty, Long Gong Scooter and Bad Cop Robin will hand out scores based on entertainment value. (These judges have been known to be swayed by gifts of the alcoholic-beverage variety. Just sayin’.)
The evening’s top five performers will go into a championship round, where a final sing-along to a song of the contestant’s choice will determine the big wiener — er, winner — of an undisclosed special prize. The Dong Gong Show starts at 10 p.m. at Voodoo Comedy Playhouse, 1260 22nd Street. Admission to the 21-and-up show is free; for more information, visit voodoocomedy.com or call 303-578-0079.
