Time and space will converge today as theaters across the country celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Doctor Who. The BBC series has been a household name in the U.K. since it premiered in 1963 and the U.S., after it began airing here in the '70s. When it was relaunched in 2005, a new fandom of Whovians — or Newvians — surfaced, giving the time-traveling Doctor even more worldwide attention.

“There’s this whole community, underneath the surface, of fans who really are passionate followers of this program. This is their opportunity to really get together in theaters,” says Dan Diamond of Fathom Events, which partnered with the BBC to bring the anniversary special to 300 theaters. “It’s a great opportunity to take a look at one of the most successful shows in the history of broadcasting and celebrate fifty years of crazed, excited fans — in 3-D, no less — on forty-foot screens across the U.S.” Doctor Who: The Day of The Doctor features Matt Smith, David Tennant, Billie Piper and John Hurt. It screens at 7:30 and 10 p.m. to-night at participating theaters. For a list of theaters in the Denver area, and to purchase tickets, visit fathomevents.com.
