As founding director of both the Art School at the Univeristy of Denver and the Kirkland School of Art, Vance Kirkland is one of Colorado's most influential painters of the 20th century. The museum named for Kirkland -- that would be the Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art -- is located on the premises of what used to be the Kirkland School of Art, and it's home to three major collections with a focus on the first three-quarters of the 1990s. In addition to a collection of Kirkland's own work, the museum also house more than 700 works significant to Colorado art history, as well as one of the premier collections of decorative art in the country. Open Mondays by appointment; a tour is offered every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
