Mal Blum has a lot to air out on the just-released Pity Boy, the transgender, non-binary musician’s second album for beloved cult label Don Giovanni Records. It’s a mental health record by Blum’s own admission, who cites coming out as trans as a major inspiration, along with recurring bouts of loneliness and alienation common to the modern era. “I need something to care about/I need someone to care for me,” Blum demands on angsty punk cut “Not My Job” But wallowing isn’t part of the mix, and there’s plenty of middle-finger humor to go around. On the punchy “Well, Fuck,” sings Blum, “You have a god, you have a boss/No matter what you call it, it’s all the same.”
