Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats and Hiss Golden Messenger

An established folkster and the go-to guy for Spotify playlists with names like “Chill as Folk” and “Boho + Chill,” Hiss Golden Messenger’s M.C. Taylor has been accruing a catalogue of vintage-feeling folk for the better part of a decade. Based in Durham, North Carolina, Taylor borrows heavily from the American songwriting tradition — it’s almost impossible to believe 2016’s “Highland Grace” wasn’t a Bob Dylan composition first — and feels right at home among steel guitars, mandolins and organ tones lifted out of The Last Waltz. On the new single “Cat’s Eye Blue,” he lets an electric piano and a hollow drumbeat stretch out beneath poetic lyrics alluding to life after grief: “Let the light of the moon open your eyes.”
